UN chief snubs defferal campaign

Posted by alejandro on 05 04 2011 | Comments

With less than a week to the appearance of six suspected post election violence perpetrators in the international criminal court in the Hague the government is in a spin in its efforts to stop the Hague trials. The government has filed a case in The Hague seeking to stop the ICC from handling the two Kenyan cases. Two British lawyers filed the application. This came as the government’s deferral bid suffered a set back with visiting UN secretary general Ban Ki moon saying he has no influence whatsoever over the security council.

Press conference - 21.03.11 - United Kingdom makes contribution to Trust Fund for Victims

Posted by alejandro on 23 03 2011 | Comments

On March 21, 2011, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland announced its contribution of £500,000 to the Trust Fund for Victims (TFV), during the Annual Meeting of the TFV Board of Directors in The Hague, The Netherlands.

Background: The Trust Fund for Victims (TFV)
The Trust Fund for Victims (TFV) is the first of its kind in the global movement to end impunity and promote justice. At the end of one of the bloodiest centuries in human history, the international community made a commitment to end impunity, help prevent the gravest crimes known to humanity and bring justice to victims with the adoption of the Rome Statute. In 2002, the Rome Statute came into effect and the Assembly of States Parties established the TFV under article 79 of the Rome Statute, to benefit victims of crimes and their families within the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court (ICC). These crimes are genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes—and in the future, crimes of aggression.

We begin in The Hague where International criminal court prosecutor Luis Moreno Ocampo has formally appealed against the decision by the pre-trial chamber to strike out police killings in Kisumu and Kibera from charges leveled against three suspects. The pre-trial Chamber judges had ruled that the events that took place in Kisumu and Kibera could not be attributed to the suspects in the ICC case against Francis Muthaura, Uhuru Kenyatta and Hussein Ali.
